CONTINUING K9 NOSE WORK
Instructor: Kathy Austin KPA, CTP, CNWI, ATDI
Location: Roudenbush, 65 Main Street
RCC-E14608 June 9-July 14 (6 Fri) 7:45 pm-8:45 pm $143/$140
RCC-E14610 July 21-Aug 11 (4 Fri) 7:45 pm-8:45 pm $97/$94
Building upon the foundation skills learned in the Intro to K9 Nose Work class, Continuing Nose Work exposes teams to a wider array of search scenarios, including exteriors, containers, and vehicles. For those teams ready to start on odor, we will focus on teaching the dogs to search for a trained target odor (birch) and building odor obedience. We will discuss the use and handling of odor and revisit some of the exercises in the introduction classes as an aid in imprinting odor. Handlers will continue to learn valuable techniques for supporting their dogs during searches, as well as beginning to understand how odor and odor movement can be affected by the environment and the handler team.

Prerequisites: 6-12 weeks of Intro to K9 Nose Work, equivalent classes, or permission of the instructor.

About the instructor:
Kathy Austin, KPA CTP, CNWI, ATDI became interested in dog sports as a way to continue training with her dog when traditional obedience classes were not the right fit. Kathy and her dog have trained in agility, rally obedience and Wag It Games. Kathy and Clancy became involved in K9 Nose Work shortly after the sport migrated to the East Coast in 2010. In 2012, Kathy became a partner at Dogs' Learning Center, and started assisting her instructor with K9 Nose Work classes. She began instructing in 2013, as well as continuing to learn about K9 Nose Work through participation in trials, seminars, workshops, and camps. Kathy is in the process of completing the Certified Nose Work Instructor program, instructs multiple K9 Nose Work classes at her facility in Hudson, MA, and is actively training and competing with Clancy. Kathy is also just beginning Nose Work journey with her new dog, Pippi. "I love watching and learning from dogs simply doing what they do best. It is pure joy for the dogs and for people." New!   INTRO TO K9 NOSE WORK LEVEL 1
Instructor: Kathy Austin KPA, CTP, CNWI, ATDI
Location: Roudenbush, 65 Main Street
RCC-E14607 June 9-July 14 (6 Fri) 6:30 pm-7:30 pm $143/$140
RCC-E14609 July 21-Aug 11 (4 Fri) 6:30 pm-7:30 pm $97/$94
Your dog has an amazing nose! This class offers an introduction to the exciting dog sport of K9 Nose Work. Based on professional detection dog training techniques, K9 Nose Work is fun for dogs of all breeds, ages and personalities. In the foundation course, we reconnect with your dog's innate abilities to sniff and to hunt through a series of exercises designed to develop independent hunting and problem solving skills. At the same time, you will begin to develop your skills as a handler by observing your dog's behavior while they are working scent. Rewarding at source, odor movement, odor cones, hide placement strategy, and other foundation concepts will be discussed. K9 Nose Work classes are a great way to offer your dog both physical and mental stimulation, and it's a game you and your dog can play for life!

Pre-requisite: No previous training is required. However, as all dogs search independently your dog will have to wait away from the search area when not working. You may bring a crate or leave your dog in your car. Crates may be covered or kept behind a barrier and will never have a line of sight to the search area.

About the Instructor:
I am a nationally Certified Professional Dog Trainer-Knowledge Assessed (CPDT-KA) and a Karen Pryor Academy Certified Training Partner (KPA CTP). My greatest goal is to increase people's understanding and appreciation of dogs as dogs. Empathy follows understanding and lays the foundation for a deeper, more honest, more positive relationship.

As a Family Paws Parent Educator, licensed to present the international programs Dogs & Storks and Dogs & Toddlers, a member of the international nonprofit Doggone Safe licensed to present their Be A Tree child-dog safety program, and a volunteer with the Lowell Humane Society, I am pursuing my goals of educating parents/adults, helping children be safe, and keeping dogs in their forever homes.

To accomplish this, in all my interactions I show clients how to communicate more effectively with their dogs through the use of positive reinforcement. Along the way, I point out canine body language and stress signals so that owners better understand their dogs' emotional states. For group training classes, I teach puppy socialization, foundation skills, and beginner obedience.
