Sept 27 (Mon) 6:30 pm-8:00 pm $18/$15

Stress is a natural part of life and can, at times, be our asset, especially when you are learning something new or need to be more alert. However, chronic stress has become an epidemic that has led to an increased susceptibility to anxiety disorders and depression. Additionally, many physical symptoms and conditions are considered caused or aggravated by stress. Some of these symptoms include: headaches, back pain, chest pain, heart palpitations, increased blood pressure, decreased immunity, sleep problems, stomach upset, muscle tension, dry mouth, difficulty swallowing, dizziness, fatigue, decreased concentration, irritability, and feeling jittery.
Stress management needs to be an integral part of our everyday lives. In this workshop, we will explore the four basic tiers of balancing stress: monitoring our general wellbeing, engaging the relaxation response, engaging in pleasurable activities, and altering our stress inducing thought processes.
The workshop will contain both information and experiential exercises that engage the relaxation response including diaphragmatic breathing, simple seated stretches and guided relaxation scripts, as well as, additional resources to continue to further practice at home.

We will start with traditional folksongs. Our classroom text will be 15 Easy Folksong Arrangements for the Progressing Singer, low voice, with CD.(The songs are really in a medium range). Then we will progress to English art songs and English translations, and then try some Italian, French, German and Spanish art songs. We will sing the songs together, and then students can chose what songs, what range, and what language they would like to practice at home. Students should purchase the text 15 Easy Folksong Arrangements For The progressing Singer, HL00740269. Sheet music and practice tapes will be provided by the instructor. If you don’t play the piano, bring a blank audio tape and the teacher will record your song for home practice. Besides learning good vocal technique, students will also learn some music theory and sight-singing skills. The only pre-requisite for students is a love of singing and the ability to sing on tune—at least most of the time. If you have any questions, contact the instructor, Jeanne Masterman, 978-692-8416.
